Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy that involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia argyior Artemisia vulgaris), a spongy herb, on or near specific acupuncture points on the body. The technique is used to warm, stimulate, and improve the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood, helping to "dispel cold" and treat various conditions

  • Purpose: According to TCM, moxibustion strengthens the blood, stimulates energy flow, and maintains general health. [1]

  • Used For: Common applications include pain management (arthritis, back pain, menstrual cramps), digestive issues (IBS), fatigue, and turning breech babies.

    Types of Application:

    • Indirect Moxibustion (Common): A moxa stick is lit and held close to the skin (not touching) to provide warmth. Alternatively, moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture needle, on a slice of ginger/garlic, or in a "moxa box".

    • Direct Moxibustion: A small, cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed directly on the skin and allowed to burn down to produce a strong, localized effect, which may cause blistering or scarring.
